Katy Beinart

Dr Katy Beinart is an artist and educator, currently a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Brighton. Her practice-based PhD, ‘Détour and Retour: Practices and poetics of salt as narratives of relation and re-generation in Brixton’ (UCL, 2019), explored practices of making with salt to understand memory and diasporic connections in a site of urban regeneration, drawing on the work of Édouard Glissant.

She has recently completed an Arts Council England funded practice-based research project, Acts of Transfer, in collaboration with Dr Lizzie Lloyd (UWE), into the spaces and subjectivities of socially engaged practice through the process of documenting and archiving the work. The project returned to the sites of a socially engaged artwork with artists and participants to re-make the work and discuss the legacy. The project produced a series of films and a book which is available from Brighton CCA.

She is a board member of Ixia, the public art sector support organisation and is interested in wider questions of archiving public and socially engaged art practices.

Her artistic practice, which engages with the public realm and communities and includes sculpture, installation, film, and performance, has been commissioned and exhibited internationally.
