Caroline AreskogJones is an artist and independent curator with an MA in Print (2019) from the Royal College of Art based in London. Curation increasingly forms an outcome from an expanded material practice, where relationships are a priority, and collaborations draw on previous professional backgrounds within both contemporary dance and physical therapy. Following a solo show Tonight Rain: Tomorrow Mud (2022), various exhibitions, presentations and residencies, Caroline received DYCP Funding from Arts Council England (2023) and has spent the past 18 months researching and responding to the Special Collections (Cetacea) at the Natural History Museum (NHM), London from which a body of works is emerging. In 2023 Caroline organised a panel discussion ‘Fieldwork as practice :: A performance : A conversation’ considering the ocean as archive and the impact of sonic human interference. It incorporated a live sonic performance and discussion with Principal Curator (NHM) Richard Sabin, Sophia Nicolov (Environmental Historian) and Oliver Beardon (Professional Skipper and founder of Sail Britain). With a longstanding focus on contingent fragilities, ecologies, human histories and their overlaps, the reciprocity of dialogue (both listening and sounding) floats beneath the surface. The archival works of twentieth century British artists (Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth) have formed a particular strand of developing influence as Caroline continues to seek out opportunities to learn and share outcomes often situated between the gaps of more formal institutions.
