Eleanor Stephenson

Eleanor Stephenson (she/her) is an art historian and curator based in London who is interested in art, science, and the British Empire, 1600-1800. Eleanor is currently completing her PhD at the University of Cambridge, researching the roles of art and science in the early British Empire, focusing on the Royal Society and slavery in Jamaica, 1660-1714. Before her PhD, Eleanor completed her BA and MA at The Courtauld Institute of Art, London. She has presented her research on British art and architecture at the Association for Art History, RKD Netherlands Institute for Art History, The Georgian Group, and the Lagos Studies Association, among other institutions. Her research on the East India Company and art and architecture in Wales and Scotland has been published by the University of Wales Press and supported by the Paul Mellon Centre.

Eleanor has worked on exhibitions and collections research projects related to the British Empire at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Dulwich Picture Gallery, and the Science Museum. She has also curated exhibitions with contemporary artists, including Aman Aheer’s (b. 1992) first UK solo show, Man is Not a Bird at St. Peter’s Church, Kettle’s Yard Cambridge in 2022, supported by the Centre of South Asian Studies.
