Emma Rutherford

Emma Rutherford is an independent consultant specialising in portraiture, particularly in portrait miniatures from the 1520s to the 1870s, and silhouettes. She currently consults at the Philip Mould Gallery, Pall Mall, London. She has written numerous articles for magazines and national newspapers, including most recently for The Burlington Magazine (February 2019) on Nicholas Hilliard’s portrait of Henri III of France and a book published by Rizzoli entitled Silhouette; the Art of the Shadow. Emma has also curated and co-curated many exhibitions of portrait miniatures at Philip Mould & Co, including Secret Faces (2008), Warts and All; The Portrait Miniatures of Samuel Cooper (2013), John Smart; A Genius Magnified (2014) and Jewel in the Hand; Early Portrait Miniatures from Private and Noble Collections (2019). Among Emma’s significant discoveries, she recently uncovered a lost portrait miniature of Charles Dickens, now at Charles Dickens Museum.
