James Gillham researches the work of British science fiction author Olaf Stapledon; a key focus of this is a project centred on the character ‘Humpty’ from Stapledon’s 1932 novel Last Men in London. This work has resulted in a series of drawings and paintings that merge fine art and science fiction.
James earned a PhD in Fine Art from the University of Reading in 2014, where his research explored the concept of capability by attending the gym for the duration of the PhD. Through writing, artwork, and physical activity, he examined intersubjective expectations and institutional demands, investigating the intersections of beginning and continuing, success and non-achievement.
James has contributed to Foundation: The International Review of Science Fiction and the British Science Fiction Association’s journal Vector.
