Jon King

Dr Jon King is a curator, researcher and art historian specialising in British art from the eighteenth century to the present, with a particular focus on early twentieth-century women artists. He is currently a Research Fellow at the National Gallery, London, where he co-coordinates the Women and the Arts Forum and contributes to research, interpretation and public programming. He was previously Bernays Curatorial Fellow of British Paintings, during which he worked on the forthcoming exhibition Wright of Derby: From the Shadows (2025) and contributed to its catalogue. His recent publications include ‘Ethel Walker, Advocacy and Recognition in the Early Twentieth Century’ (Tate Papers, 2025), and he is currently completing a book on Vanessa Bell that explores the queer dynamics of maternal ambivalence, artistic legacy and the house as archive at Charleston.

Prior to joining the National Gallery, Jon was a researcher at the Ben Uri Gallery and Museum, focusing on Jewish and immigrant artists in Britain since 1900, and held a Research Fellowship at the Yale Center for British Art. His work is grounded in feminist and queer approaches to British art history.
