Dr. Katharina Günther is a researcher, critic and curator with digital leanings. As an expert in modern and contemporary art and photography, she has a focus on British figurative post-war painting, and a strong interest in everything surreal.
She has been working for The Estate of Francis Bacon at The Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin and Tate Britain, the Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation Monaco, and The John Deakin Archive. She conceptualised and managed the implementation of the Bacon estate’s official website, francis-bacon.com. At present, she is Scientific Director of the Research Association Marbach Weimar Wolfenbüttel in Germany while teaching at the University of Cologne and curating a variety of projects, for instance the Studiolo-exhibition Francis Bacon: In the Mirror of Photography at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Siegen. She completed her PhD at the University of Cologne in 2019 (Francis Bacon – In the Mirror of Photography. Collecting, Preparatory Practice and Painting, Berlin/Boston 2022) and published widely in the UK and Germany in magazines from The British Art Journal to Kunstchronik.
Dr. Günther continues her research on Francis Bacon and his peers, while currently pursuing a project on the photographer Lee Miller.
