Maria Sledmere is Lecturer in English and Creative Writing at the University of Strathclyde and Director of SPAM Press. Her doctoral work on impossibility and the anthropocene, conducted at the University of Glasgow, looked at texts across pop culture, literary theory, poetry and installation art. It led to a creative-critical monograph, Midsummer Song (Hypercritique) (NoUP/Tenement Press, 2024) and associated poetry collection, Cinders (Krupskaya, 2024). Sledmere’s critical work and creative practice focus on the relationship between ecological crisis, digital culture and issues of health, wellbeing and gender. She is interested in how artists explore the material realities of daily life and dreamscapes within and beyond the quotidian — taking a particular interest in illustration, painting, process-led work, digital/net art, sound art and immersive experiences. In addition to collaborations with numerous poets, she has worked with the sculptor Jack O’Flynn and curator Katie O’Grady on several projects including 2021’s exhibition, The Palace of Humming Trees (French Street Studios, Glasgow). More recently, her work with composer Kevin Leomo as Project Somnolence has focused on how artists and academics negotiate issues of rest and sleep. She has contributed art writing to The Modern Institute, MAP Magazine, Permeable Barrier and other places.
