Dr Melanie Rose (Tugwell) is a painter exploring place as well as a Subject Tutor at West Dean College teaching on the BA (Hons) Art and Contemporary Craft: Materials, Making & Place.
Rose is a British Academy research scholar co-convening and curating The Long View conference and The Long View(s) exhibition in 2024 which came from research developed for her PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Leeds (LAHRI).
Rose paints in materials sensitive to place and was the New Forest National Parks artist in residence in 2023. Her choice to paint mostly in egg tempera on a chalk gesso ground echoes the chalk downs where she lives and works. Research interests include national parks, paintings held in public collections, deep mapping and topics including commoning, farming and the rural.
Rose has work in both private and public collections. She is engaged in various projects including curating and co-writing the catalogue for the first Fred Appleyard survey exhibition for Hampshire Cultural Trust in 2024, co-curating a touring exhibition Every Step of the Way and its accompanying conference Counterpoint: Walking to Change Direction, as well as making paintings for the exhibition Art and Agriculture II – Productive Land 2025.
