Pieter van der Merwe

Pieter van der Merwe is Greenwich Curator Emeritus at the National Maritime Museum (Royal Museums Greenwich), where he was on the staff in various roles, 1974–2017, latterly as General Editor. He read Drama at the Universities of Manchester and Bristol (PhD, 1979, on the 19th-c. theatre and marine painter Clarkson Stanfield – a continuing interest – and co-curated the 1979 exhibition on him at Sunderland and Bonn). His other publication has been on various topics in British maritime history and art, theatrical and panoramic scene-painting, and the architecture and history of Greenwich. He is Chairman of the Turner Society (from 2018), ‘maritime subjects’ group leader for Art UK, a vice-president of the Society for Theatre Research, and an honorary vice-president of the Society for Nautical Research.
