So Youn Kim is a Fellow of Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) who wears multiple hats of different natures: she is an abstract artist, researcher in international affairs, and President of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) Alumni Association.
So Youn has an interesting cosmopolitan background; born in Seoul, Republic of Korea, she started studying abroad in Canada at the age of 14, where she attended Trinity College School and Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. She applies a social scientific lens to her contemporary abstract expressionist paintings where she conveys her philosophical inspiration from reading classics, such as John Ruskin’s writings on art and life, Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations, Michel Foucault’s postmodernism, and a success quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Her artworks have been inspired academically and intellectually from research in international affairs and the skills she uses for analyzing public policy issues. So Youn is open for exhibition opportunities through British Art Network with curators with high expertise in contemporary art.
So Youn speaks Korean, English, and French and has a cross-disciplinary approach to the intersection between the subjects of international affairs and art. She says:
“My definition of international affairs is literally everything about everything, since in this globalized world, everything we talk about is literally international; innovative toward international affairs is as such including topics such as fashion as well. Surely, international affairs are cultural affairs.” – So Youn Kim, 9 December 2024
