This roundtable discussion questioned the positioning and visibility of diasporic artists within British ceramics practice and the Eurocentric and hierarchical narrative prevalent within ceramics institutions. The discussion panel interrogated and questioned the colonial and imperial mindset in existence in contemporary ceramics and the curatorial strategies, artistic interventions and practical possibilities for institutional change.
This event was presented as a ‘roundtable discussion’ rather than ‘seminar’ – and as exploratory, a starting point – and resulted in a further set of questions to extend the conversation around this topic. Featuring panellists Jade Monserrat, Alissandra Cummins, Bisila Noha and Woody Othello.
The discussion panel focused on the following questions:
- How can we utilise critical ceramics arts practice to question dominant narratives and make a space for institutional change?
- How are the relationships of power and display revealed in contemporary ceramics practices and discourse?
