Industry, Empire and Slavery in Birmingham’s Anglican Churches (1715-1905)
Midlands 4 Cities AHRC Funded Collaborate Doctoral Award
Deadline for applications: Monday 13 January 2025 12:00 GMT (noon UK time)
This project explores the relationship between industrialist benefactors with business interests in slavery and colonialism, and the Anglican Church in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Birmingham, focussing on Birmingham Cathedral, St Martin in the Bullring, and St Paul’s in the Jewellery Quarter.
It is supervised between Dr Kate Nichols and Dr Kate Smith (University of Birmingham) and Revd Andy Delmege (Birmingham Cathedral). As part of the doctoral award, the PhD candidate will undertake a 4-month placement across the three case study churches from September to December 2028, working with Church communities to co-produce new interpretation for the monuments explored in the thesis.
Further information about the project can be found here.
Please do get in touch with Kate Nichols [email protected] to discuss your application. The deadline for applications is 13 January 2025.
Please find further information about applying on the Midlands 4 Cities website.
