Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) are hosting a conversation inspired by Marcia Michael’s exhibition The Family Album. The panel will explore themes such as the tradition of storytelling, the importance of archiving, and the intersection of time, memory, and identity. Artist Marcia Michael, award-winning researcher and teacher Professor Pat Noxolo, and independent curator and art lecturer Dr. Sylvia Theuri will lead a thought-provoking discussion on how Michael’s work challenges representations of the Black body and reimagines family histories. Together, they’ll offer a fresh perspective on how we document and remember both personal and collective stories.
The Family Album is the first major solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Marcia Michael and is a ‘massive love letter’ to family and celebrates the sense of belonging and joy found through family connections.
This deeply personal exploration of kinship pieces together a rich family history through contemporary photography, sculptures, ceramics, and print design. The works of the British artist of African and Caribbean descent centre around three interconnected series: The Study of Kin, The Family Album, and The Object of my Gaze. These moving collections, archived as a revolutionary act of remembrance, display Michael’s ongoing journey to reconnect with and preserve memory, love and identity.
