Thursday 23 January 2025, 18:00–19:30 GMT
This special free, online event will celebrate the legacy of Transition of Riches (1993–94), 30 years after its ground breaking showcase of contemporary British South Asian visual artists in Birmingham, Southampton and Stirling. The original exhibition, featuring artists Amal Ghosh, Sarbjit Natt, Nilofar Akmut, Symrath Kaur Patti, Anuradha Patel, Jagjit Chuhan, Chila Kumari Burman and Said Adrus, challenged conceptions of British Art and the role of art and art making. As artist Juginder Lamba noted in the exhibition catalogue, Transition of Riches called on art institutions to rethink their practices and expand the narratives within contemporary art collections.
This event will be an invitation to reflect on the lasting impact of the Transition of Riches exhibition on British art institutions and its role in shaping current conversations around contemporary visual arts practice, languages of art making, curation and artistic methodologies. One of the key questions the event seeks to ask is: How can we situate this landmark show within the ongoing efforts to build polyvocal and reflexive curatorial practices today?
Panel chaired by Alina Khakoo (PhD candidate on the Criticism and Culture programme at the University of Cambridge), with Said Adrus (Artist, Transition of Riches), Nilofar Akmut (Artist, Transition of Riches) and Cary Rajinder Sawhney (Curator, Transition of Riches).
