Clare Chun-Yu Liu would like to invite BAN members to her artist talk as part of Whose Histories: Artist Talk and Archives Workshop, curated by Sine Screen. She will screen the first two parts of her film This is China of a particular sort, I do not know, which re-visits the Royal Pavilion Brighton through fictional ethnography. In the first part, George IV and Ang talk to each other about Chineseness from their very different perspectives respectively as British King and a royal Manchurian/Chinese/Taiwanese person. In the second part, Clare interviews Ang about her unique lived experience as a royal Manchurian, distant cousin of the last Chinese emperor, and a migrant to Taiwan. In response to the theme of Whose Histories, Clare will talk about Ang, who she knew from her childhood in Taipei, how Ang’s story was passed down to Clare through her parents, and explore cross-cultural historiography interwoven with personal history.
