Splits is an installation of painted sculptures, resulting from a residency Stephanie Douet undertook at Culture Hub Croatia in Split last autumn.

Following the paths of Grand Tour artists such as Edward Lear and Robert Adam, Douet arrived in the Roman city with her sketchbook and wandered around drawing the ruined palace, fragments of antique pottery and broken tombs. Meandering readings about Croatia and former Yugoslavia led her to a fascination with the country’s complicated history; its Brutalist monuments, its intricate folk costumes, its street cats, Emperor Diocletian and Croatia’s historical relationships with Venice, the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires. Douet’s wooly approach to history lays her open to finding poetic affinities between unrelated objects and people, which translates into an installation of dreamlike forms linked by an architecture of absences and shadows.

Douet’s perspective is curious and playful, even though at the core of her art lies a rebellion against norms and meanings that are delineated in her works by combining incompatible figures and personalities and placing them in unusual environments and interactions, often through improvisation and openness to the variability of the work until the last moment when she presents it to the audience. – Exhibition text by Prostor gallery accompanying Flatpackers, 2023
