This event is one in a series of 15 BAN supported seminars for 2022.

A collaborative curatorial workshop on curating eighteenth-century women artists in British and Australian collections

‘Enlightened women: British women artists in the eighteenth century’ is a collaborative curatorial workshop comprising of a keynote address and a series of short form papers in the morning followed by a workshop in the afternoon. The aim of the workshop is to devise a curatorial rational for a hypothetical exhibition about women and visual culture in Britain during the eighteenth century. As a group, we will agree on our expected outcomes and share our ideas and results at the close of the day. This hypothetical exhibition would draw material from collections in the UK and Australia and an Australian iteration will be held at The Australian National University in October. There is also the opportunity to bring both groups together online in November. It is anticipated that proceedings from the seminar series will be published electronically and that all papers may be included subject to permission.

This event is open to academics, scholars, curators and arts workers with a specific interest in eighteenth-century studies.

BAN members can book their free tickets via Eventbrite. There are separate ticket options for in-person and online attendees.

The Royal Academy is highly accessible to all visitors and there are two disabled parking spaces which can be booked in advance. There is step-free access throughout the RA, either via ramps or lifts, and wheelchairs and portable stools are available to borrow. Large print exhibition guides are provided in the gallery spaces. Assistance dogs are also welcome.

Pinxit, Rome 1794. Angelica Kauffman was born in Switzerland, but settled in London in 1766. She was one of the most prominent English artists of the 18th Century, one of only two founding female members of the Royal Academy and the last woman to be admitted until 1922. This painting, which is a very fine example of her work, was executed in Rome, where she lived with her husband, Antonio Zucchi, from 1781 until her death in 1807. It presents the artist as a kind of female Hercules, choosing not between Virtue and Vice, but between her profession as a painter, which was traditionally a male dominated field (the figure of Painting points to a far away temple, symbolising the difficulty of her journey), and a career devoted to the easier, more traditionally feminine, Art of Music. In recent years, this self-portrait has become an icon of the feminist interpretation of art history. It was acquired by the 2nd Baron St Oswald in 1908, from the collection of Mrs Strickland at Cokethorpe, to serve as a pendant to the Lockey, at the opposite end of the Top Hall (once the organ, installed in the 1820s, had been removed to Wragby Church). The 2nd Baron may have been attracted to the painting because it was thought at the time that Kauffman, rather than Zucchi, had worked with Adam on the decoration at Nostell. It remained in the Top Hall until 1939. Though it came relatively late to the collection, it is now a well known picture at Nostell.
