Patricia de Montfort

Dr Patricia de Montfort is Senior Lecturer & Research Curator for Whistler Studies, History of Art & The Hunterian. Her research interests focus on British and American 19th century art, including James McNeill Whistler and his circle; 19th/20th century women artists; the British art market, with a particular focus on digital methodologies. She has curated national and international exhibitions on these topics, including An American in London: Whistler and the Thames (UK/UK tour 2013-14), Louise Jopling: Artist and Teacher (UK, 2015), Whistler and Nature (UK tour 2018/19), Whistler: Art & Legacy (UK, 2021). Digital projects include The Correspondence of James McNeill Whistler (https://www.whistler.arts.gla.ac.uk/correspondence/, 2003-6)  Exhibition Culture in London 1878-1908, (www.exhibitionculture.arts.gla.ac.uk, 2006-9), Louise Jopling (1843-1933), research and cataloguing project (www.louisejopling.arts.gla.ac.uk, ongoing). She is founding Chair of the Scottish Women in the Arts Research Network (SWARN), a network of academic and museum/heritage professionals engaged in collaborative collections-based projects; current project, Eardley 100, commemorates the centenary of the painter Joan Eardley (1921-1963). She also serves on the steering group of British Women Artists 1750-1950, a BAN research group.
