Experimental Noise Artists Seminar

Scope Renfrewshire – Piazza Shopping Centre
15 Central Road, Paisley, PA1 1EL
15 September 2023
Convened by Chris Duddy and Moritz Cheung

This project set out to map experimental noise artists within the U.K. and contrast the opportunities available to artists in rural/non-city-based locations with those of artists residing in city locations.

A survey sent out in advance enabled us to seek insight into the experiences of noise artists in rural settings. On the day, four artists from different professional backgrounds took part in a roundtable discussion: Ruaridh Law, Fraser Rowan, Jamp, Sonam Gray and John McRitchie.

This conversation covered topics from inspiration, access, collaboration and diversity. This has opened up new pathways of questioning and research. Feedback collected from guests on the day evidenced a need for similar meetups focused networking and sharing of ideas. Performances on the day provided an accessible introduction to experimental noise for attendees.

As a result, we have:

– Gathered new contacts of noise artists working across rural/non-city areas in the UK
– Developed a new model of delivering sound-related seminars to engage with wider art practitioners and the public
– Increased understanding of experimental noise practices
– Tested online platforms to deliver experimental noise performances and talks
