Decolonisation of Ceramics Practice Roundtable Discussion

February 2 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

a beige circle on a gray background surrounded by text.

This roundtable discussion will question the positioning and visibility of diasporic artists within British ceramics practice and the Eurocentric and hierarchical narrative prevalent within ceramics institutions.

The discussion panel will seek to interrogate and question the colonial and imperial mindset in existence in contemporary ceramics and the curatorial strategies, artistic interventions and practical possibilities for institutional change.

The event is being presented as a ‘Roundtable Discussion’ rather than a ‘Seminar’ – and as exploratory, a starting point – to hopefully result in a further set of questions to extend the conversation around this topic.

The discussion panel will focus on one or more of the following questions:

  • How can we utilise critical ceramics arts practice to question dominant narratives and make a space for institutional change?
  • How are the relationships of power and display revealed in contemporary ceramics practices and discourse?
