Online Workshop: Why Catholic Material Culture Matters

February 28 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This British Art Network research group considers the art and material culture of British Roman Catholics in the British Isles and in exile during the ‘Penal period’, i.e. from the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s to the restoration of the Hierarchy in England in 1850. It aims to investigate how such collections can be understood and shared more widely, and their benefits to audiences today.

Please join us for a workshop on the relevance of British Catholic material culture to British Catholics today.

Who are British Catholics today? What, if anything, does historic Catholic material culture mean to them? This will be an opportunity to hear some of the latest demographic research on British Catholics and review the Catholic theology relating to material culture. We will discuss the many ways in which this is being put into practice today, what the challenges and risks are, and how this relates to the work of museum, heritage and research professionals.
