What about Historical Acquisitions? Opportunities and Challenges

April 22 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm

a gallery space featuring a range of artworks

The aim of this developmental seminar is to bring together a network of emerging and established curators, arts professionals and artists from across the UK to create an informal and safe space for conversation and knowledge around historical acquisitions.

The seminar seeks to ground historical acquisitions of artworks in institutional settings, exploring ideas and questions of representation, historical imbalances and challenges in acquiring and interpreting such works. Beyond acquisitions, the seminar will also situate historical works within the contemporary moment by looking at recent exhibitions and artistic interventions which bring new and necessary layers of understanding and interpretation.

This seminar will allow participants to share strategies in terms of acquisitions for their respective collections, identifying innovative acquisition models to follow and ways in which to disseminate research about recent historical acquisitions. At the same time, it will be an opportunity to understand the difficulties and barriers around prioritising historical acquisitions in the current landscape.
