Emily Fuggle is a curator who has worked in museums for over eighteen years. She is currently a Collaborative Doctoral Award PhD Candidate at Ben Uri Gallery and Museum and Queen Mary, University of London, exploring the women (curators, donors and facilitators) who shaped Ben Uri – from its founding in 1915 as a society for Jewish artists in London’s East End through its period as a cultural centre for emigré(e)s from Nazi Europe, and beyond. Her research is uncovering the radical curatorial practice which these women curators championed, their support for artists fleeing Nazi Europe and their cultivation of a network of women donors and collectors.
Emily has a longstanding interest in art and museum practice in relation to exile and migration, having worked at the Imperial War Museum, the Jewish Museum New York, and the Sarah Rose Collection of works by David Bomberg and his students at the Borough Polytechnic, held at London South Bank University. Her previous projects include the management of exhibitions at the Jewish Museum in New York City including the delivery of new galleries showcasing the museum collection (2018) and specialising in the history of Nazi persecution at the Imperial War Museum.
Emily sits on the Methodist Modern Art Collection Management Committee, for whom she chairs the Exhibitions and Planning Working Sub-Group. She is also a Mentor for the Museums Association.
