Karen Yvon

Karen Yvon: From Mediation and Programs Director at the Institute of Contemporary Art Indian Ocean in 2018, to Curator at the Intercontinental Slavery Museum today, Karen considers herself lucky to have been given the opportunity to evolve in the world of curation despite how little known this profession is in Mauritius. Since her first opportunity in 2019 as co-curator for the exhibition of South African photographer Zanele Muholi, Karen has continued to refine her skills. Thanks to a scholarship provided by three individuals who believe in her potential, she travelled to Nigeria in 2019 to participate in the Young African Curators Program at the Lagos Biennale. She also visited South Africa to gain a deeper understanding of gallery operations and exhibition setups on the continent. Upon her return, she took part in training and discussions on cultural mediation organized by the French Institute of Mauritius. Karen served as the curator for the exhibition celebrating the 20th anniversary of “Kolos” at the Caudan Arts Centre in 2020, and later for the inaugural “Lafrik dan mwa” exhibition at the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture in 2021. Her journey, which is still in its early stages, continues in the captivating world of curation.
