Niomi Fairweather

Niomi Fairweather is a Curator at Baltic. Her practice imagines alternative modes of commissioning and platforms opportunities for emerging and early career artists in the region. Niomi has curatorial experience from large organisations and artist-run initiatives and synergises these insights to cultivate environments of experimentation, collaboration, enterprise, and ambition. Niomi uses innovative programming to foster links with local communities and nurture networks of dialogue amongst a plurality of voices and perspectives. She encourages reciprocal learning to design projects and exhibitions that engage with critical socio-political, economic, and cultural issues in a globalised context. This approach has evolved through experience working with community groups and grassroots organisations. Since joining Baltic, she has curated Mythmachine by Sahej Rahal and group exhibition Hinterlands, as well as leading on a new presentation at Baltic of Hew Locke’s ambitious project, The Procession. As part of her role, Niomi also leads on BALTIC’s Artists’ Development Programme which supports development opportunities through studio visits, individual surgeries, workshops, courses and mentoring, for artists and curators based in the North East of England, at any stage of their artistic practice. Prior to Baltic, Niomi was Programme Director at The NewBridge Project where she developed and oversaw their programme.
